Wear Earmuffs: Free Ears From Damage

Aside from protecting your eyes while you are working, it is important that you also need to pay attention to your ears. In connection with the National Earmuffs Day, it is vital how you need to know the vitality of why you need to wear earmuffs. These are not just headbands but a thing that serves as your ears’ protection.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) stated that “Occupational hearing loss is one of the most common work-related illnesses in the United States”. In addition to the study, each year, about 22 million U.S. workers are exposed to hazardous noise levels at work. Over 30 million U.S. workers are exposed to chemicals, some of which are harmful to the ear (ototoxic) and hazardous to hearing.

It is a good thing that NIOSH has several recommendations when it comes to taking care of your ears. Based on the data given, here are the considerations for buying earmuffs:

  • The NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limit (REL) for occupational noise exposure is 85 decibels, A-weighted, as an 8-hour time-weighted average (85 dBA as an 8-hr TWA) using a 3-dB exchange rate. Exposures at or above this level are considered hazardous.
  • Use the NIOSH Hierarchy of Controls to reduce workplace noise to below the NIOSH REL whenever possible. Use hearing protection when hazardous noise levels cannot be adequately reduced.

Having a problem in hearing is as difficult as having eye issues. Here are the easy ways you can make your hearing one of your priorities.

Get regular checkup

Always make sure to have your ears checked regularly. It is better that you are tracking the condition of your ears. For example, if you did something that you thought was damaging, it’s important to have a proper consultation. According to Hearing Again, “an untreated hearing impairment can limit learning potential, cause social anxiety, and even lead to early dementia.”

Wear earmuffs

Earplugs are a good choice, however, there is a downside to using this. If it won’t fit, it may result in irritation of the ear canal. However, if you will be using earmuffs, you are not prone to accidents. According to American Academy of Otolaryngology, “earmuffs fit over the entire outer ear to form an air seal so the entire circumference of the ear canal is blocked.”

Once you wear earmuffs, you are not just protecting your ear canals, you also have an entire ear protection. Aside from the sounds, it is also important that you have thermal earmuffs during winter.

Let your ears rest

When you let your eyes to rest on gadgets, you should also do the same to your ears. If you are attending a concert, fashion show or any contest, it is vital to move away from the venue. It is also recommended that in every 15 minutes, you need to have a break from the noise.
