According to the study, the people who are already in their 80s and 90s and have above normal cholesterol level. There is a chance that they have a lower risk in cognitive decline or a better brain health. It is stated that for the next 10 years, their mental health is better than adults aging from 75 to 84. Those people have higher chances to develop dementia, which is 50% higher.

In addition, Jeremy Silverman, professor of psychiatry at Icahn School of Medicine, added in his interview with United Press International,”It’s not so much that cholesterol suddenly becomes good for you if you can make it to 85.”

You may still be wondering how can this be possible. The following are the things you need to know how cholesterol affects the person who is already over 85.

Cholesterol doesn’t matter for older people

In a study, entitled: No association between ‘bad cholesterol’ and elderly deaths: “An international team of experts has found that older people with high levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) live as long, and often longer than their peers with low levels of LDL-C.”


Older people with higher cholesterol, aside from having a better brain health, have the tendency to live longer. This research is according to the one who is done to the population of Japan. Why is it possible for people who even have a bigger chance to die than those who have higher cholesterol?

According to a study, entitled: High cholesterol may protect against infections and atherosclerosis. There might be several things that are happening in your system: 1) cholesterol may protect you against infections and atherosclerosis, and 2) cholesterol may protect against cancer.  

Brain needs cholesterol to function

For you to have a better brain health when it comes to your memory and learning, cholesterol is important. However, it is essential to keep your cholesterol level managed. Adults lower than 85 only need to have a bit of cholesterol in order not to suffer the consequences of having higher cholesterol. Reducing cholesterol can help in improving your memory. But, this is not applicable to everyone.


As stated on the study, entitled: The Effects of Cholesterol on Learning and Memory, “What is clear from all of these experiments is that cholesterol is critical to learning and memory and disturbances in cholesterol levels, synthesis or metabolism have significant consequences. These disturbances appear to have a range of direct and indirect effects.”

Everyone has their particular health conditions. If you are over 85 years old yet you are still suffering from other diseases, having high cholesterol might not help you to have a longer life. It is also important to consult your doctor if the cholesterol that you have is right for your body or not.
